The Motorcyclist Training Course (MTC) offered by the California Motorcyclist Safety Program (CMSP) caters specifically to beginner riders who have minimal to no experience in street riding, and it is mandatory for individuals under the age of 21. The curriculum is structured to include 5 hours of classroom learning and 10 hours of practical, on-cycle training. Participants are guided through the basics of motorcycle operation, advancing to skills and strategies for street riding. Successfully completing the course grants participants a waiver for the DMV's skills test (DL389).

The course covers a range of topics such as overcoming fear, mastering motorcycle controls, the dynamics of turning, effective cornering techniques, and skills for avoiding accidents in emergencies. It is informed by the latest findings in rider safety research and employs contemporary teaching methods. While the course is tailored for novices, it is also beneficial for any rider who has not previously completed a motorcycle safety course. A prerequisite for enrollment is the ability to ride a two-wheeled bicycle. The program provides motorcycles and helmets for all participants.

MTC Participants must attend all sessions in the exact order as indicated.

If you filled out the paperwork that was sent to you, please bring it to the range, or in person classroom, do not send it to the office. Anyone not ready to start on time for any session will be dismissed and will forfeit their course fee. Reschedules/cancellations must be made 5 days prior to the start of Class Session 1.

There are weekday and weekend classes available. Each class consists of 2-classroom sessions, or the online eRider course if that was your selection. Both are complimented with 2 ranges sessions riding a motorcycle.

Classroom sessions will vary by class. Some are eRider, at your own pace, online with a web based interactive learning setting. Other classes are both in person in Otay.

Range sessions will take place in one of the the following locations: Southwestern College OR North Island Credit Union Amphitheatre. Both are located in Chula Vista. Please double check which location you are signing up for when registering. Please plan on arriving at least 15-30 minutes early to the range so that you have adequate time to check-in, gear up, or complete paperwork.

Classes are 2 half days OR 2 full days. Times will differ throughout the year. Please refer to your confirmation email for the times of each session. The schedule is as follows:

California Motorcyclist Safety Program 1-Day Course

The California Motorcyclist Safety Program 1-Day Course allows riders–who are 21 and older and who already know how to ride but are not licensed–the opportunity to achieve intermediate level skills. Riders will also receive a DMV skills test waiver for successful completion of the course.

It is also the perfect next step for newer riders who are looking to improve their skills as well as riders that have recently returned to riding after years off. This course includes both classroom and on-cycle instruction.

The 1-Day Premier Course is based on the most current research in rider safety, utilizes modern training methods and has been proven to enhance student outcomes. Although designed primarily as a safety course, the course is also challenging and fun. It is completed in one 8-hour day. We will provide one of our training motorcycles for use during the course or students may choose to ride their own motorcycles/scooters as long as it meets the requirements. A motorcycle riding jacket is required to take this course.

Successful completion of both the riding and written portions of the course will earn the rider a DMV DL389 skills test waiver. Per California regulations, you will still need to complete the DMV written test.

If you do not feel comfortable during the course and want to stop, you may drop yourself from the class. Students who are counseled out or self-drop have 60 days from the start of their course to complete training. A $205 rescheduling fee may be assessed. Refunds are not given in these cases.

If you are tardy, you will not be allowed to continue and will be responsible for a $205 rescheduling fee.

Classes can be cancelled at the discretion of PSC if they do not fill with the minimum amount of students. PSC will do it’s best to annotate when classes have the chance of being cancelled. PSC will do it’s best to notify students with adequate time to reschedule, but PSC is not responsible for reimbursement of any missing time off of work when you schedule a class. Our goal is to post the schedule based on demand so they have time to fill and not be rescheduled.
